KEEPING THE FAITH ACTION ALERT
April 30, 2007
URGENT ALERT!
H. R. 1592 the so-called “Hate
Crimes” bill could be voted on in the U. S. House this week – possibly
this Thursday, May 4. This is a dangerous bill and must be stopped.
The first finding in the bill reads:
“The incidence of violence motivated
by the actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin,
gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability of the victim
poses a serious national problem.”
This bill is a “discriminatory
measure that criminalizes thoughts, feelings, and beliefs and has the
potential of interfering with religious liberty and freedom of speech,”
according to Glen Lavy of the Alliance Defense Fund. If you want to
read more commentary about the bill and what it will do, go to any
search engine and put in World Net Daily H. R. 1592.
All of our Republican Congressman
will vote against this bill. There is a companion bill in the Senate (S
1105), and if it comes to the floor for a vote both Senator Chambliss
and Senator Isakson will vote against it.
Currently, the makeup in the House is
202 Republicans and 233 Democrats. It takes 218 votes for a bill to
pass or fail. The bill has 137 co-sponsors – including GA Rep. John
Lewis (D-5), so in order for the bill to pass they need 81 additional
votes. All calls make a difference, but if you live in the district of
one of these Congressmen, your call makes even more of a difference. If
you are not sure which congressional district is yours, go to our web
site
www.gachristianalliance.org
and click on Georgia’s U. S. Representatives – then type in your zip
code.
Please call the following and urge
them to vote against this bill:
Sanford Bishop (D-2nd)
202-225-5831
Jim Marshall (D-8th)
202-225-6531
Hank Thompson (D-4th)
202-225-1605
John Barrow (D-12th)
202-225-2823
David Scott (D-13th) (This is the
response I received after making my call.
“I recognize your concern with
respect to hate crime legislation. I personally, along with many fellow
Democratic colleagues, support preventing acts of crime in all
circumstances. I also feel strongly that a responsible society must
identify and strive to protect individuals and groups most vulnerable to
bias-motivated crime. In the past, I have co-sponsored bills to end hate
crimes against gays and lesbians and supported a policy to end
discrimination based on sexual orientation, religion, or race.”)
202-225-2039
Remember, YOU make the difference.
Please make those calls.
Thank you for Keeping The Faith,
Sadie Fields
